Dr. Ambedkar Mahaparinirvan Diwas 2019

Dr. Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar’s 64th Mahaparinirvan Diwas was celebrated on Friday, 6th December 2019. It is an annual observance signifying the day when Babasaheb left for heavenly abode, attaining nirvana, on 6th December 1956.

In 2018, 63rd Mahaparinirvan Diwas (death anniversary of Babasaheb) was observed.

The statues of Dr. Ambedkar were cleaned and refurbished for the day. Special events were organized in parks and crossings with the statue of Babasaheb Ambedkar.

Special events were also organized at Chaitya Bhoomi in Mumbai which is the resting place of Dr. Ambedkar and also serves as Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Mahaparinirvan Memorial.  A senior Cabinet Minister of Maharashtra held a meeting with BMC, BEST and Mumbai Police officials, regarding the arrangements made on Babasaheb’s death anniversary. However, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Mr. Uddhav Thackeray was criticized by the opposition for not attending the meeting.

The Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) had made special arrangements for the devotees visiting the Chaitya Bhoomi located in Dadar’s Shivaji Park. The annual budget of INR 10 lakh for the arrangements had also been increased to INR 15 Lakh by the BEST.  This time 292 additional night lamps were provided at Chaitya Bhoomi, Shivaji Park, and other relevant locations. Two generators were also be placed at Chaitya Bhoomi to ensure that the lights don’t go off.

40 additional buses were put in service from Dadar to Chaitya Bhoomi and vice versa from December 5 to the evening of December 7, for the convenience of millions of devotees.

Millions of devotees from different corners of India reached Chaitya Bhoomi to pay their homage to Babasaheb on his death anniversary. Central Indian Railways had launched 12 special trains for the convenience of devotees visiting Chaitya Bhoomi.

People had already been coming to the city two or three days in advance to be a part of the observance. Elaborate arrangements for shelter and other amenities have been made for the convenience of visitors.

The books based on the life of Dr. Ambedkar were distributed for free. Mumbai District AIDS Control Organization had also planned programs and a free medical checkup camp to raise awareness about the disease. Political leaders and members of the public all over the country paid tribute to Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar on his death anniversary.

Out of the 14 Special trains launched for the followers of Babasaheb, 3 would run between Nagpur and CSMT, 6 trains between CSMT/Dadar and Sewagram/Ajni/Nagpur, 2 trains between Solapur and CSMT, 2 between Adilabad and Dadar and 1 special train would run between Ajni and CSMT.

On the occasion, the Mumbai Police issued some traffic advisory to be followed from 3 pm on 5th December to 12 pm on 7th December to control the rush in the city. The advisory can be checked by visiting the official website of the Mumbai Police. Mumbai was equipped with tight security, an estimated 40,000 police personal are deployed to make the celebration safe and peaceful.

The Bharat Ratna Awardees Dr. B. R. Ambedkar was paid tribute by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, Social Justice, and Empowerment Minister Thawarchand Gehlot, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi and the other members of Parliament. Karnataka chief minister H. D. Kumaraswamy also paid floral tribute to B. R. Ambedkar on his statue in Bangaluru.

In 2018,

The President led to pay floral tribute to the statue of Babasaheb at Sansad Bhavan Lawns in the Parliament House complex. Following him, the Vice President, Prime Minister and other members of parliament also paid their tribute to the Architect of Indian Constitution. The Ambedkar Foundation, the autonomous body of Social Justice & Empowerment organized the ceremony.

The Babasaheb Youth Committee, Indore organized a silent rally which started from Nehru Nagar and continued till Geeta Bhavan. Indian Buddhist Foundation, Samta Sainik Dal, Matoshree Ramai Women Committee and Indian Republican Bahujan Foundation commemorated the day by paying a collective tribute to Dr. Ambedkar.

There were special arrangements made at Chaityabhoomi, the resting place of Babasaheb, on account of a huge crowd visiting the place on Mahaparinirvan Divas on 06th December. The security was tightened and there was a close watch on the events. The facility and management service in the area was also beefed up on the account of a huge rush on the occasion.

Central Railway started 14 special trains on the occasion of Mahaparinirvan Divas. The trains plied from 04th to 7th December. Mumbai traffic police also did special arrangements seeing the huge rush at Chaityabhoomi as a huge number of followers visited the place to pay homage to the ‘Father of Indian Constitution’. BEST, the transport authority of Mumbai ran special ‘Mumbai Darshan’ buses on the occasion for the people visiting the city. The bus halted at the key places which were associated with Babasaheb and other tourist spots.

Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Mahaparinirvan Din

Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar had died on the 6th of December in 1956 that’s why Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Mahaparinirvan Din or death anniversary is observed every year all over India on the 6th of December to pay him a lot of tribute and honor. He is called “The Father of the Indian Constitution”. The people in India pay him tribute by offering flowers, garlands, ceremonial lamps, candles and literature at his elegantly decorated statue. On this day a large crowd of people visits the Parliament House complex in the morning in order to pay honor and respect by chanting the most famous slogan “Baba Sahib Amar Rahe”. Some people including Bodh Bhikshus sing several sacred songs on this occasion.


A large crowd of people from all over the country gets thronged at the ”Chaitya Bhoomi” (Dr. Ambedkar’s memorial) at Dadar in order to pay reverence to the great architect of the Constitution of the India, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. All the facilities like toilets, water tankers, washing rooms, fire stations, telephone centers, health centers, reservation counter, and etc become available on this day at Chaitya Bhoomi for ease of the people.

The Samata Sainik Dal Salute is taken at midnight on the 5th of December by his daughter-in-law, Meeratai Ambedkar. After giving the salute, a recitation of his teachings takes place and then the stupa gates get opened for all.

Why Dr. Ambedkar Mahaparinirvan Diwas is Celebrated

Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Mahaparinirvan Diwas is observed every year by organizing a function by the city corporation and SCs and STs State Government Employees’ Association to commemorate the great contribution of the Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar towards the country. His great efforts help a lot to keep the country united. The constitution of India written by Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar is still guiding the county and helps it in emerging out safely even after it had passed throughout the several crises.

Dr. Ambedkar Foundation has been set up by the Indian Government (on 24th of March in the year 1992) so that the people all over the country can get his message of social justice.

> Set up of the Dr. Ambedkar National Public Library at the Janpath.

> Making available the works of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar in all the regional languages including Hindi.

> Organizing a variety of conferences, workshops, exhibitions, lectures, seminars, symposiums and fairs based on the life as well as mission of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar.

> Offering Dr. Ambedkar National Award to the weaker sections and Dr. Ambedkar International Award for the social changes.

> Organizing every year the birth anniversary celebration on the 14th of April and death Anniversary on the 6th of December of Dr. Ambedkar.

> Launching Dr. Ambedkar National Merit Award Schemes to distribute the award among meritorious students belonging to the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes.

> Availability of Dr. Ambedkar Chairs in the Universities for running the research activities over the thoughts of Dr. Ambedkar.

> Publishing a monthly magazine of Samajik Nyay Sandesh in the Hindi language.

> Offering Dr. Ambedkar National Relief to the victims of violence related to the SC.
