About World Deaf Day

World Deaf Day is celebrated every year last week (last Sunday of the month of September) of September to draw the attention of the general public, politicians and development authorities towards the achievements of the deaf people as well as the deaf people community. Throughout the celebration of the event, all the deaf people organizations worldwide are encouraged greatly to fulfill the demands and needs of the deaf people as well as increasing their rights all over the world.

World Deaf Day 2019

World Deaf Day 2019 was celebrated last Monday (30th of September) in the month of September.

Every year the World Deaf Day is organized on the last Sunday of September by the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD). The objective of the observation is to promote the human rights of deaf people across the globe. WFD works in close coordination with the United Nation and other agencies like the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to support the deaf.

This year the theme of World Deaf Day was “Sign Language Rights for Deaf Refugees”.

A conference of theoretical issues in sign language research was organized from September 26 to September 28 at the University of Hamburg, Germany. The conference is organized every three years to familiarize the deaf community with the advances made in sign language.

An event was organized by the Mithibai College in Mumbai, where the students formed a human chain to raise awareness about the everyday problems faced by the deaf and also to dissuade people from honking unnecessarily. The students also gifted at least 30 hearing aids worth Rs 10 lakh to the deaf children from Mumbai. It had been possible by the donation made by Dr. Bharat Sanghvi.

World Deaf Day History

A person named, Granville Richard Seymour Redmond (born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA in the year 1871) got deafness because of scarlet fever in his early childhood. He was supported by his family to a lot and given higher education in a special school. He was the owner of the natural artistic talents which was getting spread all over the world.

He also learned the painting, drawing, and pantomime from the famous California School of Design in San Francisco. He was very talented as same as a normal person. Because of this reason, the World Deaf Day is commemorated all over the world for the deaf and by the deaf for their healthier conditions, better life, self-esteem, nationality, schooling, and work.

Importance and Activities of the World Deaf Day Celebration

People must participate in celebrating World Deaf Day not only as Deaf Day but to expand the way of growth and development through the new technologies as well as to offer deaf people a wide variety of opportunities to change their lifestyle. It is celebrated with the rallies, seminar and various deaf awareness campaigns including some fun events.


Various social organizations of the Varanasi city is working for the deaf people rights as well as aware the common people about noise pollution hazards through the several programs and rallies which begins from the Luxa police station, passing through the Gurubagh, Rathyatra, Sigra and ends at the Shahid Udyan of the city.

> To motivate deaf people to learn sign language as an essential human right.

> To make available the required resources in the community for deaf people.
